Richard Carleton

It’s just been announced that 60 Minutes reporter Richard Carleton has died, minutes after asking a question at a press conference at the Beaconsfield mine. He was one of the towering figures of Australian journalism over the past few decades, probably most famous for his “Do you have blood on your hands?” question to Bob Hawke in 1983. I never met Richard, but was at university with his son James, now carrying on his father’s legacy as an ABC radio journalist.

I’m not sure he was so much famous for the question as for being the object of Hawke’s answer!

Don’t bag someone until you have met them‘ is clearly not suitable to today – I expect you shan’t feel so restrained when you read my comment;)

Perhaps you meant de mortuis nil nisi bonum dicendum est? But ‘“de mortuis nil nisi verum, de vivis nil nisi bonum,” would approach perhaps much nearer to good sense‘, in the words of one of Dr Johnson’s correspondents.

    I must agree.

    Mork,
You disrespect the dead and that is a sin. Shame and you and those silly others on that link of yours. Its a disgrace and I feel ashamed for you, you shall meet your maker one day and I hope you can make up for the disrespect you have shown to such a upstanding citizen like Mr Carleton.
